IT（情報通信技術）の発達によって、毎日頭を使っているつもりだが、言われたばかりのことを忘れてしまったり、忙しく働いているのだけれども、人付き合いが煩わしいと思ってしまう状態を指す。IT機器を使っていても脳機能が低下しているのである。脳は入ってきた情報を処理することで働く「入力」だけでなく、文字にしたり話したりするという「出力」で初めて作業が完了する。しかし、パソコンや携帯電話に囲まれた現代社会においては、他人と接触する機会も少なくなり、情報は一方的に入ってくるだけのことが多い。運動しなければ筋肉が衰えるのと同じように、脳も使わなければ劣化してしまう。文章をペンでなくパソコンで書いていると、知っているはずの漢字も書けなくなってしまうことがあるが、それがITボケのはじまりといわれている。専門家によると「人付き合い」が脳力の低下を防ぐ最善の策だという。生身の人とのやりとりほど、次の展開を予測できないものはなく、相手の目を見、声の調子を聞くなど五感を最大限に働かせながらことばを選ぶために、もっともよく脳を使う作業となるからである。
